Questions worth asking any roofer

These are the questions a homeowner should put to every contractor who quotes their roof — not just to us. Here are our answers, in writing, before you ask.

Before you sign

Ask all of these. Of everyone.

A good contractor will answer every one of these without hesitating. If someone dodges, that is your answer. Print this list and take it to your next estimate, including ours.

What happens if you find something that isn't in the quote?

Rotten decking is priced per sheet in the written scope before we start, so it cannot become a surprise mid-job. Anything else we find is photographed, priced and brought to you before we do it. Nothing is added to your bill without your say-so.

Are your crews employees or subcontractors?

Both. Our crews are a mix of employees and subcontractors, and everyone on your roof works to the same written scope and the same standard. Ask any roofer this question — the honest answer in this trade is usually a mix, and a company that claims otherwise is worth a second question.

Will someone on site be able to communicate with me?

Yes. You get a named point of contact reachable by phone for the whole job, plus a client portal where you can message us and track the entire process from inspection through to final photographs.

Are the workers legally authorized to work?

Yes. Our crews are legally authorized to work in the United States, and they are some of the best in the business.

Can I meet the company owner?

Yes. RafterCore is owner-operated and the owner is reachable directly — not a call center and not a salesperson who disappears after the contract is signed.

Will you give me a written quote without seeing my insurance claim?

Yes. Our price ranges are published on this site and the quote is the same either way. You get a measured scope and a number based on your roof, not on what a claim says. We do not advise on what your policy covers or whether to file — we are roofers, not licensed public adjusters.

Will there be a porta-potty on my property?

No. We do not place a portable toilet on your property. Crews make their own arrangements off site.

Is everyone covered by general liability and workers compensation insurance?

Yes, and we are licensed, insured and bonded in both markets. We will provide certificates of insurance before work starts, and you are welcome to ask for them at any point.

Who is going to oversee my roofing project?

A Project Manager is assigned to your job and stays with it from start to finish. You are not handed between people, and you always know whose phone to call.

Could you install my roof yourself if I asked you to?

Yes. We are hands-on in both markets and can do every part of what we are selling you. It is a fair question to ask anyone quoting your roof, because plenty of people selling roofs have never installed one.

Can you show me photos or video proving my roof needs the work?

Every inspection comes with photographs and measurements of each component and its condition, and the report is yours whether or not you hire us. If your roof has five years left in it, we will tell you that instead of selling you a new one.

One line we hold. Several of these questions come back to insurance, and our position does not move: we document what we find and give you the report. We do not tell you what your policy covers or whether to file a claim. That is between you and your carrier, and any roofer who tells you otherwise is telling you something about how they run the rest of the job.
