Why local matters on a roof
- Storm chasers leave. After a big hail event, out of town crews arrive within days and are gone within months, taking the workmanship warranty with them.
- Wisconsin roofs have local problems. Ice damming, freeze and thaw cycling, and heavy wet snow loads are not what a crew from a warm climate details for.
- Valley roofs have local problems. Ultraviolet aging, tile underlayment failure and monsoon wind are not what a crew from a cold climate details for.
- Code and permits are local. Requirements vary between municipalities here, and knowing them prevents a failed inspection at the worst possible moment.
- Reachability. If something needs looking at in year four, we are a short drive away.
A roof here has to handle a hundred degree temperature swing across the year, freeze and thaw cycling that works fasteners loose, and snow that sits rather than sheds. Details that are optional in a mild climate are not optional here.
A roof here faces relentless ultraviolet, surface temperatures well above air temperature, and monsoon storms that arrive as wind and horizontal rain rather than as snow load. Heat ages a shingle from above and an unventilated attic ages it from below, so ventilation matters even more here than it does in a cold climate.
